Telehealth Funding Still Available

Telemedicine has become standard practice for many providers since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, but for others implementing a telehealth program has been a challenge.

Often smaller providers or those located in rural areas struggle to find the money to pay for a new telehealth program. They are likely unaware that millions of dollars are available as grants and other special funding programs.

You can find different types of funding through the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), which aims to provide equitable health care no matter where people are located.

The HRSA says it’s already given out grants to more than 3,000 organizations and promotes “telehealth as a way to deliver health care,” focusing on rural, urban, and underserved communities.

Here’s a look at some of the telehealth programs you and your organization can benefit from:

  • Licensure Portability Grant Program

This program works to make telemedicine more accessible by supporting partnerships between states that work to develop licensing laws to cut down regulatory barriers to telemedicine.

  • Telehealth Network Grant Program

This program uses telehealth networks to improve services in underserved communities. It expands access to services and training for health care providers. The telehealth networks use rural tele-emergency services to provide 24-hour consultation services for rural providers without emergency care specialists.

  • Telehealth Resource Center Programs

These programs provide technical assistance, training, education, and resources to rural and underserved areas.

The USDA has also been providing funding assistance to promote telehealth. The Emergency Rural Health Care Grant Program provides up to $500 million in funding.  Its Recovery Grants provide immediate relief to the COVID-19 emergency, including help to increase telehealth capabilities.

Its Impact Grants are meant to help sustain rural health care in relation to the pandemic.
